It was my privilege to be a small part of Pats life while she was at Pearl Street. We enjoyed many hours of time together as I was able to visit with her for about a half hour each week for several years. I always brought my little dog Wolfie and she love to feed him scraps from her lunch tray. We spent many hours enjoying stories of her childhood in Germany, and her family life. She loved the Lord Jesus and was a faithful testimony to Him. I will truly miss her!

Earl thank you for spending so much time at the memorial with us! We are so honored to know you, and I want to say an extra thank you for the beautiful pamphlets you brought to Mom for all those years. After reading and enjoying them, she saved them for me for the next time I visited from Canada. So I also was the recipient of your kindness, and was inspired by the articles, especially the back page about nature. God bless you!

My first meeting with Mrs. Nicks was in August 2004 when I accompanied Manisha who had secured a seat in the University of Denver. We found Manisha an apartment at 'The Andrew' on S. York Street that happened to be just opposite that of Mrs. Nicks. We are so thankful to God for providing such a loving and caring neighbor who assured me that she would "keep an eye" on Manisha; and she really did. We felt so comfortable knowing that Mrs. Nicks was there for her. She extended the same love and care to Will who was with Manisha at DU at that time and was happy to know that were to be married. She graced Manisha's Graduation ceremony by her presence. Chandran (Manisha's dad) met her during this time. Together, we have had memorable conversations, and enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared entirely by her in her neatly kept apartment.
We had kept in touch over the years through letters/ cards and phone calls.
Mrs. Nicks had made a lasting impression in our lives with her beautiful smile, impeccable dress sense, love of music and current affairs, and her intense love for fellow human beings. We feel greatly privileged to have known her.
Our condolences to all the members of her family. We pray that her soul Rest in Peace.
Mary Abraham,
India.

It was with great sadness that I heard of the passing of my good friend Miss Nicks who lived out in Denver. She was a dear, sweet little lady who was one of those rare folks who sweep the weariness of the world away from your soul as soon as she sees you. Miss Nicks lived alone surrounded always by tons of loving friends-which included her next door neighbor and great friend Manisha-as well as many other close neighbors through the years because she was perhaps the last person on earth who still talked to and wished always to get to know her neighbors. Even at 90 plus years old-perhaps especially at 90 plus years old-she could hold a deep and interesting conversation like nobody's business and would always try to top it off one way or another by inspiring you with confidence that God has big plans for you. And I am sure that God has big plans for her—-to soar among the angels.

Thanks so much for your comments Will! It's so good to hear how our Mom impacted other people's lives, and is an inspiration to us as well! As kids, even adult kids, we are sometimes so used to our parents ways that we get kind of used to them and don't appreciate them as much as we should, although I know we both feel very blessed to have had her as our Mom.

Mrs. Nicks was a dear dear friend, I miss her and think of her often. I came to know her through Ron’s visits (her mail carrier, my husband) which expanded to our joint visits. She was interested in everything and loved people. Despite her physical frailty she had one of the most positive outlooks on life I’ve ever encountered. I admired her deep faith and conviction and always came away from our visits wanting to emulate that.
We loved listening to her stories and she delighted in listening to our stories of our adventures traveling abroad. I was so happy we were able to zoom with her last year from France, she was amazed at the technology that enabled that. One of the stories that she told us was about her first trip back to Germany after moving to the U.S. with her overweight suitcase and seating herself in first class. I’m sure the airline employees told that story to their families over and over after she made them open her suitcase and donned 2 or 3 heavy coats she had packed to get the suitcase under the weight limit. She was resourceful, determined and persistent in everything she did.
Her knowledge of nutritional supplements was astounding and she always had recommendations of things to try for various ailments. She told me many times about magnesium as a sleep aid. I finally got around to taking it this year and felt so sad that I was not able to tell her how well it works for me, she would be pleased. She also tried many times to get Ron to take cod liver oil. She actually got him to try it one time, and we thought “poor Eddy and Ramona”….
She never forgot to ask about our son Aaron and prayed for him regularly. She always had good advice and provided a valuable perspective on parenting and raising children; and she was not shy about expressing her opinion about Dr. Spock’s baby book!
She loved music and listening to the radio. This photo was taken in 2016 on a visit with her at Pearl Street. Ron brought his ipad and we watched a video of Horowitz’ return to Moscow concert after having left the Soviet Union decades earlier. She thoroughly enjoyed it and we enjoyed watching her enjoyment! We were so happy to see the photo you posted of her with the piano as we knew the story about the piano when it was taken by the U.S. military.
Mrs. Nicks has had a deep impact on our lives as I know she has on all her friends and family. That, to me, is the true meaning of a life well lived. We miss her very much.

Ahhh, a legend. Mrs Nicks. You know how growing up your own parents are certifiably crazy and, with some luck, you might find the mother or father of a friend who is wise and stable? I found Pat. Teen years are hard, but she always had a way to counsel, to get to the nub of the matter. She did it firmly, but with kindness and clarity. She brought a world view to our neighborhood. Her thinking and English were accented with her life experiences. Her voice seemed to carry a lilt, as if she was about to break into laughter at any moment. I am a better man for having known her, for having had a taste of her wisdom as a young man.
Love to all of you,
Trip Mackintosh

Trip! I remember many times during those teenage years sitting around the kitchen table with you and other friends, sometimes waiting for coffee or tea and her mac & cheese to help balance out our teenage excesses, and wondering why my friends liked to come to our house and talk to my Mom, because she was just my Mom, like any other parent. I've since come to realize that we were very blessed to have such a wise and engaging Mom, and laugh & appreciate all of those memories.

Mrs. Nicks was one of the first people I met when I moved to Denver from India as an international student. She lived in the opposite apartment. She was kind, warm and welcoming. She was also feisty, intelligent and very engaging. I miss the times we sat at her kitchen table listening to the radio, watching Jeopardy and discussing everything from politics to religion- the very things that “you are not supposed to discuss“ but which were always interesting and inspiring.
She often told us about her life growing up in Germany. I especially remember her talking about the Christmas Trees and the live candles. I also remember her talking. about the time she lived in Atlanta and Marietta and her adventures while taking the bus to the Buckhead library. She was a true friend to so many DU students. She was also very friendly with Will (my husband) who was then a student at Iliff. It was wonderful to meet her again in 2016 when we visited Denver.
She attended our graduation and most importantly made us feel welcome in a new country. She was the best neighbor I have ever had. My parents, relatives and friends who visited always met with her too. Everyone would always ask how is Mrs. Nicks doing ?
So many precious memories . Our conversations would go on for hours but now are snapshots of great memories. I will definitely miss her but will treasure all these moments we shared. I am so glad that our paths crossed during this lifetime. Deepest Condolences to Ed, Ramona and your families.

Thanks Manisha! So many great comments you have! They just bring tears to my eyes, and makes me want to be a better neighbor and friend! So many things we don't realize about our parents and their impact on other people's lives, things that don't get said enough. We appreciate you, Will, Madhura, Somani, Zane and all of her other friends that were students at DU that helped keep her young.

I went to college with Waltraud’s (aka, Mrs. Nicks) daughter Ramona. Since I lived out of state, many of my classmates would take me home on weekends. Many a weekend, it would be to Mrs. Nick’s house. I always loved chatting with your mother Ramona. She was so open to hearing from young people, and memories come back of the times I visited that house on Dahlia Street, and had these wonderful chats with your mother. Whether it be politics or food or religion, she always sought out opinions and had quite a few of her own! The last time I saw her, she was in the care home in South Denver. I think I spent the better part of a day visiting in her room along with you and your friend Leslie. Always a lively discussion, your mother didn’t miss a beat! She must have been getting close to 90 then, and she was sharper than ever. The last time I heard her voice was on your cell phone speaker when you were visiting me in Hawaii and we were in the car. I can still hear the way she always said my name, using both my first and the last name with a note of being excited to see me and ready to engage in yet another debate or discussion. I just know that if we were together right now we would be coming up with all kinds of memories and laughter!
